Police: East Side house fire ‘suspicious’

NEW CASTLE — City police and fire officials say a fireman was injured fighting a suspicious fire on the city’s East Side.

The blaze broke out at 1222 E. Washington St. around 10:20 p.m. Monday.

Fireman Delbert Lane sustained a shoulder injury, according to reports.

Firefighters were at the scene until 11:43 p.m. battling flames on the first and second floors. They said the two-story building, owned by Denny Flora, appeared to have been vacant.

The building, valued at $30,000, sustained an estimated $25,000 damage. There was an estimated $500 loss to the contents.

According to a police report, investigators found an unlit but used hand flare on a hallway floor, just outside the kitchen, and most of the first-floor damage was in that area.

A police investigator said the basement door was damaged by fire and the flames appeared to have traveled to the staircase to the second floor.

The officer said he noticed a strong kerosene smell in the basement.
