New Castle school board schedules special meeting

NEW CASTLE — A special meeting of the New Castle school board has been scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

A legal advertisement for the meeting identifies the session for “general purposes” with no other explanation.

However, the session follows a contentious meeting last week where a 5-4 majority on the board voted to halt the Lockley school consolidation project, which was intended to expand the existing Lockley Elementary School and close the other elementaries in the district.

Also at that meeting, Superintendent George Gabriel, upset over the move, submitted his letter of resignation effective Jan. 31. The same 5-4 majority voted to accept the resignation.

A letter writer to The News has suggested there’s plenty to be negative about when it comes to the city of New Castle. In general, are you negative or hopeful about our city?

I’m negative. Nepotism, corruption, and incompetence have ruled for years. Nothing has changed.
I’m hopeful. I view the county as a whole, so there’s a lot to be positive about.
Mixed. I think we’re like any other area. You have to take the bad with the good.
