Two hurt in Route 422 crash

NEW CASTLE — A Girard, Ohio, woman sustained major injury in a two-car collision in Mahoning Township.

State police said Maria Lacivita, 38, of Girard, Ohio, was the injured passenger in a Pontiac Sunfire driven by James Karpik, 31, of Penn Run, Pa. Troopers said he sustained moderate injury in Thursday’s accident on Route 422.

No hospital information was available for either victim.

According to police, the accident occurred around 2:30 a.m. near Palmer Road, when a Buick Regal driven by Richard Crawford, 27, of Sharpsville, tried to pass in the center lane going west, just as the Sunfire, driven by Karpik, was moving into the center lane.

Karpik’s left side hit the right rear of Crawford’s car, police said. Upon impact, Karpik’s car crossed the westbound lane, went off the road and into a ditch, hitting an embankment. It then spun clockwise and rolled.

Crawford had continued driving west, then returned to the scene, police said.

Crawford was wanted in Trumbull County for failing to appear in traffic court, according to police. He was placed in the Lawrence County jail to await extradition to Ohio. Officers said he was not injured.

Poice said charges are pending against both drivers for allegedly driving under the influence and for numerous summary traffic violations.
