Police: Dog had no food, water or space

NEW CASTLE — A Lower East Side woman is facing charges for allegedly leaving her dog without food or water during hot temperatures.

Police said they were called Monday to the home of Delores Graham, 38, of 24 N. Cedar St., after a neighbor reported hearing the gray pit bull whining all day. She said she found the dog in a cage without food or water. She said that throughout the day, she tried to give it water but she had not seen her neighbors all day.

Police said the dog was in a small cage in the middle of the yard with a torn up plastic bowl lying near the cage. The dog had no room to lie down and it barely had room to turn inside the cage.

As police were removing the dog, Graham returned home after reportedly having been gone for six hours. She said she had left water for the dog but no food.

It was taken to the Lawrence County Humane Society animal shelter, where the city dog law officer put a hold on the animal for the pending case.

Officers said the National Weather Service put the peak temperature around 2 p.m. Monday at 81 degrees.

Graham has been charged with cruelty to animals and sent a summons to appear in court.
