City man facing drug charges

NEW CASTLE — A lower East Side man allegedly tried to sell drugs to an off-duty officer on the street.

Police charged David Richard McLaren Jr., 34, of 230 N. Walnut St. in connection with the incident, which occurred around 10:45 p.m. Monday near the Lawrence County courthouse.

A New Castle officer said he was in civilian clothes and had been walking east on East Washington Street when McLaren approached him and asked if he wanted to buy a “bud.”

The officer said McLaren showed him three clear plastic bags containing suspected marijuana.

The officer then identified himself as a policeman and McLaren was arrested.

Police said they also had found pill bottles on him, one of which contained a straw and the others with pills. He also had nine clear plastic bags and $12.

McLaren faces one count of manufacture of a controlled substance and two counts each of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance.

He was arraigned by District Judge Melissa Amodie and lodged in the Lawrence County jail in lieu of $10,000 bond.
