Officer cut while breaking up bar fight

NEW CASTLE — A New Castle police officer suffered a cut on his leg while trying to break up a brawl at a local bar.

Officers were called around 2:20 a.m. Thursday to the Courthouse Cafe at 426 E. Washington St. where multiple people were fighting inside the front door.

One officer said he went inside and saw several people in a fight but they did not respond to his orders to disperse. Others in the crowd turned on the officer, who was pushed and a chair was kicked over, hitting him on the left shin and causing a small cut, he reported.

The officer used pepper spray on the people who had been fighting, the disturbance stopped and the crowd went out and left, police said.

Officers reported they had learned Lawrence Austin, 32, of 316 Shenango St. had started the fight and he was arrested. He is charged with disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.

Police also have charged Elenka Geavonie Moss, 44, of 230 W. Lincoln Ave. with failure of disorderly persons to disperse upon official order, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness, after she was told to leave the premises.
