North Hill shooting believed to be isolated case

NEW CASTLE — A shooting on New Castle’s North Hill Sunday appears to be unrelated to shootings Thursday and Friday at Crestview Gardens.

Police Chief Bobby Salem said Michael Betts, 33, of Detroit, was shot in the hand at a house in the 200 block of Park Avenue. When police arrived, he was in the parking lot of a nearby store.

The incident occurred around 12:03 a.m., he said.

Betts was struck with buckshot from a shotgun. The ammunition sprayed and some pellets may have hit him in the face, Salem said, but police are still unsure about why his face also was bleeding.

Betts was uncooperative with officers when they tried to question him and get him help. They went back to the house where he allegedly had been shot and three women exited the house screaming, according to police.

“That appears to be where the incident happened,” Salem said, adding neither Betts nor any witnesses would give police statements about what had happened.

Betts was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown for medical care.

Salem said he believes there is no connection between the Betts shooting and the two last week at Crestview Gardens, one of which was fatal.
