Man jumps into Shenango River

NEW CASTLE — New Castle police and fire departments were dispatched Wednesday morning after a man jumped into the Shenango River.

Police were called at 11:35 a.m. and the fire department was notified about 10 minutes later.

Firefighters said they dispatched vehicles in anticipation of a water rescue and established a staging area at the Columbus Innerbelt bridge behind the fire station. However, before anyone from the department entered the water, the man came out of the river and was taken into custody by police.

Firefighters said the man was not injured as a result of his cold water plunge.
