Man charged following crash

NEW CASTLE — An Ellwood City man has been charged with endangering the welfare of children following a traffic accident last month.

State police charged Mark Robert Bacon, 33, of 536 Glen Ave., whose vehicle had collided with another one June 1 in the 700 block of Portersville Road.

Police said Bacon had been eastbound and crossed into the other lane of traffic after he threw a cigarette out the window. The cigarette blew back into the vehicle and he was trying to remove it, police said.

His vehicle crashed head-on with a westbound car driven by Mary Anna Jenkins. Police said she suffered a scrape on her wrist, a bruise on her neck and internal contusions of her chest.

Police said Cameron James Houk, 3, was unrestrained in the front passenger seat in Bacon’s vehicle and suffered apparent internal injuries. He was flown by helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh.

An officer recovered a small plastic bag of a white powder substance, suspected cocaine, on the ground where Bacon had been standing, police said. Children’s Hospital staff reported finding two red straws in the child’s underwear, according to police. The staff also reported seeing a white powder residue in the straws, police said. Officers took possession of the straws.

Bacon was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of children and one count each of accident involving death or injury, intent to possess a controlled substance, use/possession of drug paraphernalia, driving with license suspended, habitual offender, driving without a license, driving while operating privilege suspended or revoked, failure to keep right, disregarding traffic lane, careless driving, improper child restraint system and failure to use safety belt.

He was arraigned by District Judge Jennifer Nicholson and released on his own recognizance.
