Suspicious box in Wampum not a threat

NEW CASTLE — A suspicious box left outside an Ellwood City bank on Wednesday prompted police to call the Allegheny County bomb squad.

Wampum police chief Frank Janetti said the alarm turned out to be groundless.

The chief said someone reported finding a military-style ammunition box on the curb in front of Northwest Savings Bank on Main Street about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

“The bomb squad arrived, X-rayed the box and found that it contained nuts and bolts,” Janetti said. “They said there was no danger.”

He said police were concerned because the box was “purposefully placed” on the curb outside the bank’s front doors. Police have since secured the metal box.

He said police are trying to determine who placed the package, triggering the scare.
