Fire guts Union Township house

NEW CASTLE — The state police fire marshal is investigating a fire in that broke out in a vacant Union Township house Monday.

Union Township firefighters responded at 3 a.m. to 314 Smithfield St.

Pat Donofrio, Union Township fire chief, said that when fire trucks arrived, flames were shooting through the roof. He said the house was a total loss.

The chief noted the building had burned more than a month ago and appeared to have been under renovation.

Fire crews remained on scene until 6:10 a.m. and were assisted by the North Beaver Township Volunteer Fire Department.
