Bessemer resident injured in crash

NEW CASTLE — Jerry L. Browning of Bessemer was listed in good condition Thursday at a Pittsburgh hospital following an accident.

Browning was taken by helicopter to Presbyterian Hospital following a one-car crash on Mohawk School Road about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. The accident was in front of the Mohawk schools complex.

North Beaver Police Chief Mark Pelto said Browning was eastbound when he failed to negotiate a curve at East Poland Avenue and Mohawk School Road and went off the road, striking a telephone pole and causing a temporary power outage.

North Beaver Township Fire Chief Paul Henry said Browning was trapped and had to be extricated from his car by firefighters.

The pole was snapped in three pieces and about 1,200 customers were out of service for about a half-hour, according to Chuck Jackson, Penn Power area manager. He said all power had been restored by Thursday morning, even though crews were expected to work all day installing a new pole.

Police also reported there were phone outages.

Bessemer and Mahoning Township police and Noga Ambulance provided assistance at the scene. An investigation is continuing.
