Vacant Union Township garage burns

NEW CASTLE — The Pennsylvania state police fire marshal has been called to determine the cause of a Bluff Street blaze.

Pat Donofrio, chief of the Union Township Volunteer Fire Department, said the crews were called at 9:03 p.m. Wednesday. Firefighters remained at the scene until about 11 p.m.

Donofrio said the building, a garage, was on vacant land between 42 and 52 Bluff Street. He added he does not know who owns the property.

He said the building was stuffed with tires, old clothing and other junk. No vehicle was inside. He pointed out that while the building is still standing, “it was a total loss.”

The Union Township department was assisted by firefighters from South New Castle Borough.
