Local teams receive playoff pairings

NEW CASTLE — The WPIAL announced its 2014 playoff pairings on Tuesday night.

The New Castle High boys received the No. 1 Class AAAA seed and a first-round matchup against Latrobe at noon Saturday at North Allegheny HIgh School.

In Class AA boys action, Neshannock received a No. 5 seed and a first-round bye. The Lancers will play Wednesday vs. the winner of the first-round Shady Side Academy-Northgate clash at a site and time to be determined.

The Laurel High boys, meanwhile, will play West Shamokin at 3 p.m. Saturday at North Allegheny.

The Class A boys field will have Union taking on Wilkinsburg at 8 p.m. Friday at Butler.

Four local teams will be a part of the Class AA girls post-season action.

Neshannock received a No. 4 seed and a first-round bye. The Lady Lancers will play Tuesday against the winner of the first-round Washington-Shady Side Academy game.

Mohawk will meet South Side Beaver at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Moon.

Laurel's opening game will pit the Lady Spartans against Ford City at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Butler.

Finally, Shenango will square off against Charleroi at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Montour.
