Man dies when tractor flips onto him

NEW CASTLE — A man clearing trees in Little Beaver Township died when his tractor flipped up and rolled on top of him.

Robert Lewis Mattocks, 36, of 1422 Mud Bridge Road, Enon Valley, was pronounced dead at the scene  at 7:55 p.m. Sunday by Lawrence County deputy coroner Alfred DeCarbo.

DeCarbo said Mattocks and others were logging in a wooded area north of his property. He said Mattocks was pulling a large tree with a tractor when a large limb on the tree became hung up on another tree. This caused the front end of the tractor to flip up and roll on top of Mattocks, trapping him under it, DeCarbo said.

DeCarbo said the accident occurred in a remote area, presenting a challenge for police and medical assistance to get to the scene.

He noted an autopsy was scheduled yesterday at the Heritage Valley Medical Center in Beaver, but results are not yet available.
