Man hit by gunfire on church steps

NEW CASTLE — An apparent bystander suffered a bullet wound to the leg Wednesday morning.

The 23-year-old South Side New Castle resident went to Sharon Regional Hospital for treatment after the incident, which he said had occurred on Mill Street at Phillips Street.

The hospital contacted both New Castle and Sharon police.

The victim told police he and his wife had been sitting on the steps of a church around 2 a.m. when a man rode past on a silver mountain bike. When a blue Buick stopped on Mill Street, the man jumped off the bike and ran through the lot, the victim told police. He said two men got out of the car and he heard a gunshot and felt something hit him. He told police after he ducked behind the church steps he heard more gunshots.

The man said he believed a bullet was in his leg and a fragment in his forearm.

Police found a spent shell in the area of the incident and bullet holes in the window of a nearby business.

A letter writer to The News has suggested there’s plenty to be negative about when it comes to the city of New Castle. In general, are you negative or hopeful about our city?

I’m negative. Nepotism, corruption, and incompetence have ruled for years. Nothing has changed.
I’m hopeful. I view the county as a whole, so there’s a lot to be positive about.
Mixed. I think we’re like any other area. You have to take the bad with the good.
