NEW CASTLE —
New Castle police seized 13.5 grams of suspected heroin from a vehicle reportedly involved in gunfire early yesterday.
The police received reports of gunshots in the 100 block of East Reynolds Street around 12:45 a.m., and witnesses saw a red truck being chased by a black Pontiac Sunfire.
Police spotted a red Chevrolet Blazer traveling through the South Side and tried to pull it over, but it sped through various streets and turned into a parking lot on Moravia Street. It then left the lot and continued speeding through the South Side and crashed into a bush off West Chartes Street. Police said the passenger side door was open and the vehicle was unoccupied.
Several officers searched the area with dogs but could not find the driver.
The police found a .40-caliber assault rifle in plain view on the back seat. A bullet was found on the floor by the back seat and a 9-millimeter bullet was on the floor in the front, they said.
The rifle’s magazine was loaded with three rounds, plus one was in the chamber.
The vehicle was impounded and police contacted the owner, who said she had not seen the vehicle in three months because her son uses it and lends it out to people.
She gave police permission to search the car, where they found a plastic bag containing the suspected heroin, packaged in several stamp bags.

A South Side man was arrested on gun and drug charges following a traffic stop on the city’s North Hill. Martel Lamar Webb, 19, of 199 Hamilton St. had been wanted by police on charges in a domestic assault case in May when police caught up with him.

Woman charged for assaulting 1-year-old
A New Castle woman was arrested and charged with the assault of a year-old child in Scott Township. Nicole Martin, 26, of New Castle was arraigned before District Judge David Rishel on a charge of simple assault. She was lodged in the Lawrence County jail on $1,000 bond.
