Woman charged with drug smuggling try

NEW CASTLE — An Ohio woman was arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle drugs to a Lawrence County jail inmate through the mail.

New Castle police charged Kathryn Lynn Davis, 48, of Bellaire, Ohio, with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, criminal conspiracy to commit possession with intent to deliver, and criminal use of a communication facility.

Jail officials reported to police Aug. 27 that a letter sent to an inmate contained strips of suspected Suboxone, used in treating opiate addiction.

A jail official found the substance upon holding a flashlight to the envelope after noticing irregularities in the seams, police said.

The envelope had the address of an Ohio woman.

The next day, jail officials monitored all the inmate’s phone calls and found additional mail with suspected Suboxone strips, according to police. That letter was from a different Ohio woman, with the same return address of Bellaire, Ohio.

Jail officials learned from one of the inmate’s phone calls that he had been arguing with Davis about his mail because he had not received it. She said she had mailed two letters with regular stamps, police said.

The handwriting on those letters were matched to other letters he had received and they all had been written by Davis, police alleged.

She also had called and left a voicemail for a jail official, complaining about the inmate not getting his mail, and left her phone number.

When Davis visited the inmate Sunday, police took her into custody.

She was arraigned Thursday by District Judge Melissa A. Amodie and released on a nonmonetary bond, pending her preliminary hearing.
