Fire displaces North Hill family

NEW CASTLE — A basement fire displace a North Hill family and their three dogs early Thursday morning.

The New Castle Fire Department was called to 119 W. Sheridan Ave. about 12:30 a.m. They remained until 2:20 a.m.

Resident Freda Shaftic told firefighters she had heard an explosion and saw smoke coming from the radiators and up the stairs from the basement.

Firefighters said the blaze was confined to the basement, adding the cause is still under investigation. They noted it appears to have been accidental.

Damage is estimated at $10,000 to the building and $2,000 to contents.

Firefighters said the residents and their three dogs left the house after smoke was seen and smoke alarms were activated and spend the night with neighbors.
