Authorities: Woman died of natural causes

NEW CASTLE — A woman whose body was found in Wampum late last week apparently died of natural causes.

Elane Gayle Haswell’s body was discovered by relatives Thursday morning in a drainage ditch near her home on the Chewton-Wurtemburg Road in Wayne Township.

State police said Haswell, 59, apparently had been dead for several days.

An autopsy was performed by Dr. James Smith, forensic pathologist, whose preliminary results found signs of a massive heart attack.

The findings also ruled out the possibility Haswell was struck by a hit-and-run driver.

Authorities believe she was getting out of her car at her home when she suffered a heart attack, became disoriented and fell into the ditch.
