School bus hit by car downtown

NEW CASTLE — An empty school bus was involved in a minor accident Thursday morning when it was clipped by a car at a downtown intersection.

Bev Culley, a veteran bus driver for Mohawk schools, had just dropped off students at the Scottish Rite Cathedral for the annual Veterans Day program. There were 16 bus loads of Mohawk students transported to the Cathedral for the progrm.

Culley said her bus was stopped at a red light on North Street, where it intersects with Jefferson Street.

When the light turned green, Culley said she began to make a left turn onto Jefferson Street when the front of the bus was struck by a vehicle that was traveling north on Jefferson Street.

That vehicle continued for a few blocks before pulling over and waiting for police.

The contact knocked  off the signal arm attached to the front of the bus and caused minor damage to the front of the coach.
