West Side man convicted in shooting

NEW CASTLE — A New Castle man has been convicted of attempted homicide.

A jury of 10 women and two men on Thursday returned a guilty verdict on Justin Juan Johnson, 29, who has addresses at 111 N. Lee Ave. and 421-09 Neshannock Village.

He was convicted of attempted homicide and two counts of aggravated assault.

According to court documents, Johnson shot at Regan Pierre, then 19, six times with a 380 caliber semi-automatic handgun on Aug. 10, 2011, as Pierre drove by the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Shenango Street. One bullet hit Pierre, breaking his left arm and leaving the bullet lodged in his chest.

The trial began on Monday.

Assistant District Attorney Bill Flannery, handling prosecution for the Commonwealth, presented four witnesses, including the victim. Attorney William Panella defended Johnson who took the stand on his own behalf.

A letter writer to The News has suggested there’s plenty to be negative about when it comes to the city of New Castle. In general, are you negative or hopeful about our city?

I’m negative. Nepotism, corruption, and incompetence have ruled for years. Nothing has changed.
I’m hopeful. I view the county as a whole, so there’s a lot to be positive about.
Mixed. I think we’re like any other area. You have to take the bad with the good.
