NEW CASTLE —
An Ellwood City man is in jail after allegedly reaching for a knife when questioned by a police officer.
Charged with aggravated assault is Joshua David Simmons, 20, of 1850 Brighton Road. He was arrested late Sunday night after police had stopped him on Glenn Avenue in Ellwood City.
According to police, officers were called to the area after someone had attempted to break into a parked vehicle. While checking the street, an officer observed a pedestrian, later identified as Simmons.
When the officer approached Simmons and asked him if he had anything in his possession police should know about, Simmons allegedly said he had a pipe.
Police said Simmons then began to reach into his back pocket and the officer grabbed him and restrained him against a cruiser. Simmons’ back pocket was checked and police said they found a double-edged knife with a three-inch blade.
A pipe allegedly was found in his front pocket.
In addition to the aggravated assault charge, Simmons was accused of possession of drug paraphernalia.
He was arraigned and placed in the Lawrence County jail in lieu of a $25,000 bond.
