NEW CASTLE —
A project to replace I-79 bridges that cross Route 422 will begin Monday.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the $14 million project in Butler County also will include reconstructing ramps, new signs and an Intelligent Transportation System installation (a traffic monitoring camera and three digital message signs).
Work at the area will run through the fall of 2014.
PennDOT officials tout the project as an example of its Next Generation approach to highway projects. Among other things, the project will be a cooperative effort between PennDOT’s District 9, which covers Butler County, and District 11, based in Bridgeville. The intent is to improve the efficiency of the project.
Next Generation endeavors are intended to save $50 million a year overall by eliminating some of the artificial boundaries created between PennDOT districts.
The prime contractor for this project is the Trumbull Corp. of Pittsburgh.
Crews will begin the project by constructing temporary crossovers through the median on I-79. To allow this construction, short-term single-lane closures will occur in both directions on I-79 in the interchange area. Restrictions will occur from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays through early March.
The crossovers are necessary to allow crews to replace the I-79 bridges, one at a time, over Route 422. The northbound bridge on I-79 will be replaced first. After the crossover construction is complete, long-term single-lane traffic in each direction will begin with traffic shifted to the southbound side of I-79. Approximately 25,000 vehicles use I-79 in this area on an average day.
Motorists are advised to use caution, slow down and expect changing traffic patterns on the overpasses.
