Gov. Tom Corbett’s main campaign committee took in $2.9 million in contributions and ended 2012 with a war chest of $3.5 million.
A campaign finance report made public Friday revealed that the Tom Corbett for Governor committee received nearly $2 million from business people and other individuals last year. It also received and more than $822,000 from dozens of political-action committees.
Corbett received $100,000 each from John Mork of Englewood, Colo., a petroleum engineer with Energy Corp. of America, which specializes in natural gas and oil; and David Barensfeld of New Brighton, president of Ellwood Group Inc., a metal-products company.
The only declared candidate for governor in 2014, Democrat John Hanger, says his campaign took in $200,000 since he declared his candidacy in November.
Hanger, said he personally invested $25,000 of the nearly $54,000 in contributions that he listed on his first campaign finance report filed Thursday.
The former state environmental protection secretary and former state utility regulator says he raised the rest of the $200,000 since the end-of-year cutoff for that report.
At least a half-dozen other Democrats are considering challenges to Corbett when he runs for a second term next year.
Corbett’s year-end report was not available last week, but he spent $24 million on his 2010 campaign and remains a potent fundraiser. Last year, he gave more than $200,000 to the state Republican Party and the GOP’s legislative campaign committees.

Man charged with arson after his house burns
A Taylor Township man who allegedly doused his home with gasoline faces multiple charges of arson and assault. Jason P. Merlini, 39, of 309 Warner Alley was charged with six counts of arson, five counts of aggravated assault including one for domestic violence, one count of reckless burning and five counts of recklessly endangering another person.

‘Carelessness’ caused Overlook fire
The state fire marshal has determined a blaze at the Overlook Health and Rehabilitation Center was caused by carelessness. Trooper David Jungling issued his report Friday and said the blaze was determined to have been caused by the careless disposal of smoking materials.

Two people were injured in a pair of accidents Thursday, New Castle police reported. One involved a car that went over an embankment off West Pittsburg Road in Taylor Township around noon.
