NEW CASTLE —
Two Pittsburgh-area men claiming someone shot at their car were arrested when police found seven pounds of marijuana in it.
Jerry Burgwin Jr., 38, of Glassport and Jackie Maurice Hayward of Pittsburgh remain in the Lawrence County jail in lieu of $50,000 bond each, following their arrest Friday night.
New Castle police had blocked off a portion of Cascade Street for nearly an hour looking for the car.
Police Chief Bobby Salem said officers found gunshells all along Cascade Street. Police said they recovered 16 .40-caliber shell casings from the area.
Officers initially were called to the area of South Cascade and Adams streets regarding shots fired, around 6 p.m.
Later, an officer driving north on Cascade Street saw a silver Mustang speeding south. The driver hit the brakes abruptly, causing the Mustang to slide into the intersection, according to reports. The car then sped through the red signal and turned onto Butler Avenue, police said, almost colliding with another car.
Police stopped the car, which was occupied by two women. The driver apologized but said someone was shooting and she was trying to get away, the officer said.
Police found a steaming tire on South Cascade Street near Grandview Avenue. Two men in a pickup truck alerted them to a black Mercury Sable missing a tire on Adams Street. The car’s rear window was shattered and its lights were on.
The car was registered to the woman driver in the initial traffic stop, police said.
Meanwhile officers saw two men running on Stanton Avenue then get into a silver Mustang. They stopped the car on Stanton Avenue with the two men and two women in it.
Police found a black bag on the back passenger side floor containing about seven pounds of suspected marijuana.
They obtained a search warrant and seized the bag, along with a shirt that had multiple plastic bags in the pockets.
Police learned Burgwin, one of the car’s occupants, is on state parole for five more years. He told police he and Hayward had driven to New Castle together to meet someone and the entire incident stemmed from a large drug deal that had gone bad. He added someone had shot at him and Hayward.
Hayward told police that a car had pulled up alongside them and shots were fired into the car.
He said he was struck by a shell casing and he and Burgwin then parked the car and ran, then they sat on a rear porch of a house on Adams Street, where Burgwin called one of the women to pick him up.
Both Burgwin and Haywood are charged with possession with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance, conspiracy to commit possession with intent to deliver and conspiracy to commit possession of marijuana.
