NEW CASTLE —
An Ellwood City teen who allegedly took his mother’s vehicle could be facing a variety of charges.
New Castle police expect to file charges against the 16-year-old male. He was admitted to Jameson Hospital early Friday morning after going over a hillside above Rural Avenue after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase.
Police said they became involved after seeing a small, white Chevrolet northbound on East Street at high speed about 1:45 a.m. Friday.
The officer, who was eastbound on North Street, said he slowed to avoid a collision when the Chevy failed to stop at a flashing red signal light at the intersection of East and North streets.
The officer said he activated his emergency lights and siren, but the vehicle continued north on East Street, turning right into Hurricane Drive.
Officers said the driver continued, with the police car in pursuit, through the parking lot at New Castle High School, then drove over a curb onto Rhodes Place, striking the curb and turning onto East Lincoln Avenue. The officer said he lost the vehicle on Crawford Terrace.
Fearing the vehicle had crashed, the officer returned to Crawford Terrace and found a group of people gathered near a guide rail. He said he saw the fleeing vehicle on its roof at the bottom of the hillside on Rural Avenue, with a male trapped inside.
The driver was taken to Jameson Hospital by ambulance.
Police said they contacted the youth’s mother and learned the two had had a disagreement earlier that evening. She told police she had discovered her vehicle was missing when she attempted to leave her home to respond to a call that her son was at Jameson.

A South Side man was arrested on gun and drug charges following a traffic stop on the city’s North Hill. Martel Lamar Webb, 19, of 199 Hamilton St. had been wanted by police on charges in a domestic assault case in May when police caught up with him.
