New Castle’s Anderson earns all-state honors

NEW CASTLE — New Castle’s Shawn Anderson made quite a name for himself in the WPIAL over the past two years.

People notice when you lead your team to two unbeaten regular seasons and two WPIAL titles.

Today, Anderson is a household name across Pennsylvania as the 6-3 senior was named to the Class AAAA all-state first team. The squad is selected by sports writers across the commonwealth.

Anderson has committed to play his college ball for Navy. Joining him on the first team were Syracuse recruit B.J. Johnson of Lower Merion, and Penn State recruit Geno Thorpe of Shaler. Johnson and Lower Merion handed New Castle its only loss of the season in the PIAA semifinals, while Anderson competed against Thorpe in Section 3.

Rondae Jefferson of Chester, who will play for Sean Miller at Arizona next season, was named the state’s Class AAAA player of the year.

Meanwhile, a few other players with local ties earned spots on their respective all-state teams:

Class AA: Drew Cook and Elijah Cottrill of Beaver Falls, and Matthew Dogan of West Middlesex. Cook and Cottrill competed against Lawrence County teams in Section 2, while both Beaver Falls players and Dogan participated in the New Castle Tip-Off Classic in December.

Beaver Falls coach Doug Biega was named Class AA coach of the year.

Class A: Elijah Minnie, a 6-9 junior from Lincoln Park, made the first team, while Maverick Rowan, a 6-5 freshman for the Leopards, was named to the second team. Lincoln Park is a member of Section 1 and competes against Union High.
