Hikers found safe

NEW CASTLE — Two hikers who had been reported missing Monday night in McConnell’s Mill State Park were found safe and uninjured.

The hikers, Cole L. Ransom, 23, of New Castle and Katherine G. Tester, 25, of New Galilee were found at 11:31 p.m. Monday.

Jake Weiland, assistant manager for the Moraine State Park Complex, said they were found on the North Country Trail section between Eckert Bridge and Hell’s Hollow, known at Walnut Flats.

The search team included Scott and Slippery Rock townships and Portersville volunteer fire departments.

Weiland said park officials recommend people who hike at the park put a trip plan together and inform a family member or friend of the plan. It should indicate how long the hike will take and what time they anticipate returning.

“We always stress” hikers should carry flashlights, he added, particularly at the gorge.

Weiland said hikers should plan to return to their vehicle before the sun begins to set.
