Fire destroys vacant Bessemer house

NEW CASTLE — A vacant house at 24 Sixth St., Bessemer, was destroyed by fire early yesterday.

Neighboring houses on the north and south sides of the structure, as well as a garage behind the neighboring house to the south, also were damaged.

Bessemer Fire Chief Lou Laughlin said the fire was deemed suspicious because all utilities at the house had been turned off. The state police fire marshal is investigating.

Laughlin said that of the three houses, only the neighboring house to the north of the ruined structure was occupied. A neighbor pounded on the door there and awakened a sleeping man and woman who both escaped safely, although the south wall of their home was damaged by the fire.

The neighbor and a man delivering newspapers called in the alarm about 4:15 a.m. Sunday.

Laughlin said the department is trying to determine who owns the destroyed house.  A neighbor told him it was once up for sheriff’s sale.

Bessemer firefighters were assisted by departments from Enon Valley, South New Castle Borough, Mahoning and North Beaver townships, as well as Poland and Springfield townships in Ohio. About 40 firefighters responded and were on the scene until 8:30 a.m.

On Wednesday, the House of Representatives voted to authorize Speaker John Boehner to sue President Obama for allegedly overstepping his legal authority with the way he's handled Obamacare. Good call?

Yes. Obama's been overstepping his authority since day one in office. It's time he pay the piper.
No. The allegations are ridiculous and the law suit is a waste of time and tax payer money.
I don't know. I'm not a huge fan of Obama, but the suit seems a little extreme.
