Homeless man faces assault charges

NEW CASTLE — A homeless man is facing charges for allegedly beating up a man who was sleeping in a tent Friday evening.

Ronald T. Howard, 42, who stays at Tent City — an encampment of homeless people on the banks of the Shenango River near the Columbus Innerbelt — is to be charged with simple assault and harassment.

A 51-year-old man reported that he had been sleeping in a tent on the west side of the Innerbelt and Howard punched him in the face several times, then kicked him in the ribs while he was on the ground.

The man was treated at Jameson Hospital, police said.

A letter writer to The News has suggested there’s plenty to be negative about when it comes to the city of New Castle. In general, are you negative or hopeful about our city?

I’m negative. Nepotism, corruption, and incompetence have ruled for years. Nothing has changed.
I’m hopeful. I view the county as a whole, so there’s a lot to be positive about.
Mixed. I think we’re like any other area. You have to take the bad with the good.
