NEW CASTLE —
Charges have been filed against an Ellwood City man who apparently shot himself in the testicle last month.
Borough police charged William Curtis Bonzo, 23, of 722 Fourth St. with prohibited possession of firearms by a convicted felon, carrying a concealed weapon without a license, carrying a prohibited offensive weapon and recklessly endangering another person.
He has not been arraigned.
According to police, an argument broke out Nov. 4 at a bar in the 400 block of Bell Avenue. Police were told the argument progressed to the street and gunshots were fired outside.
Police reported a teenage witness said two men were arguing outside the bar when Bonzo came out to see what was going on. The witness said as Bonzo approached the men — one of whom allegedly held a gun — he apparently shot himself as he attempted to pull a gun from his waistband.
According to police, when the gun discharged, the bullet struck Bonzo’s right testicle, skimmed his right leg and hit his left ankle.
Officers said they confirmed the eyewitness report by watching a surveillance tape of the area. A bullet was recovered on the road, officers said.
Police said Bonzo was taken to Ellwood City Hospital by a witness, and later transferred to Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.
At Ellwood City Hospital, police said, he told officers he had run from the scene after being shot. Officers said he also told them he would have shot back but did not have a gun.
