NEW CASTLE —
New Castle police have arrested a man for allegedly robbing a woman in an alley near Chestnut Street.
Officers said they had been looking for Robert Lee Gravatt, 23, of 321 Shaw St. in connection with a different theft when they saw him running behind Chestnut Street.
A woman told police she and some friends had been at a house in the 700 block of Chestnut Street around 12:30 a.m. Sunday when Gravatt asked her for a cigarette. She said she told him to get one from her purse inside a friend’s car then, a short time later, discovered her wallet was missing from her purse.
She told police she had confronted Gravatt, who became angry, tackled her, choked her and slammed her head into a wooden deck. She said he also had tried to reach into her top and take her money.
When she went and sat in a car, he approached her and threatened to harm her more if she didn’t give him money. She said her friend drove the car off to get away from him.
A witness gave police a similar account of the incident.
Officers said they had caught Gravatt jumping from a wall behind a neighboring house.
The woman told police she had found her identification and bank cards strewn throughout the yard.
Police also received a report around 5 p.m. Thursday that Gravatt had taken an iPod from a woman’s purse at a party and allegedly sold it at a pawn shop Wednesday. The pawn shop confirmed the purchase from Gravatt for $50, police said.
Police have charged Gravatt with robbery, simple assault, disorderly conduct, harassment and theft in connection with the Chestnut Street incident.
He was arraigned by District Judge Jennifer Nicholson and lodged in the Lawrence County jail in lieu of $5,000 bond.
Police said the other incident is still being investigated.
