Ellwood City plant to close

NEW CASTLE — Sabre Industries will close its Ellwood City plant this summer, affecting about 80 employees.

Ellwood City Mayor Anthony Court said Friday that plant manager Joe Kelly had informed him and borough manager Robert Villella this week of the closing that will occur by the end of July.

Court said the closing “is nothing against the borough. It’s just economic conditions.”

Saber Industries has two larger facilities in Iowa and Texas, Court noted, and has offered positions at those plants to the local employees.

“It’s heartbreaking for me because we worked very hard with Sabre Industries for two years, and the loss of jobs saddens me,” Court said.

He noted 40 of the employees are Ellwood City residents.

Sabre Industries, which is based in Alvarado, Texas, produces steel tubular structures for utilities.

An attempt to reach a company official Friday was unsuccessful.

Have you held or will you hold a garage/yard sale this year?

I have and it was a success! It's a great way to get rid of some junk and make a little extra pocket money.
I have, but it didn't go over so well. Better luck next time?
I haven't yet, but I plan to.
I haven't and I don't plan to. It's not for me.
