Pirates president to speak at local event

NEW CASTLE — The Pittsburgh Pirates president is coming to town.

Frank Coonelly, a Penn State University alumnus, will be the keynote speaker May 2 at the New Englander banquet center in Neshannock Township.

The event is being sponsored by the Lawrence County Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association, and all proceeds will go to the chapter’s scholarship fund.

Each August the chapter awards scholarships to outstanding high school seniors who will begin their freshman year that fall.

The night out featuring Coonelly will begin with appetizers served at 6 p.m., followed by the program at 7 p.m.

Nick Colella, a New Castle graduate and basketball star, will also be honored for outstanding achievement during his Penn State basketball career.

A walk-on during the 2010-2011 season, Colella played in 26 games this season, and started six Big Ten games. He was awarded a scholarship for his final season.
