Man arrested after car hits tree

NEW CASTLE — An East Side man was arrested after his car struck a tree downtown during an attempted traffic stop.

New Castle police charged Devin Delan King, 33, of 423 E. Lutton St., in connection with the incident, which occurred around 3 a.m. Sunday.

Police said they saw King and know his license is suspended. As they tried to stop him, he sped up and abruptly turned left into an alley off Sciota Street.

His car continued at high speed over a curb onto the sidewalk at Steinbrink Place, police said. King tried to get out of the car while it was still running, they said, and the car crashed into a tree. He ran through an apartment complex and officers chased and caught him.

Officers said they found a glass crack pipe on the floor of the car, which was towed.

Police learned King has four bench warrants — three from Lawrence County and one from Mercer County. Two are felony warrants.

He told police at the city lockup that he was sick, and officers learned he allegedly had taken seven roxycodone tablets as they were trying to stop him in his car.

He was taken to Jameson Hospital, then to jail.

King is charged with fleeing and eluding, flight to avoid apprehension, possession of drug paraphernalia, tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, defiant trespass, careless and reckless driving, and driving while his license is suspended.

He was arraigned by District Judge Melissa Amodie, who set bond at $2,500.
