South Side man faces gun, drug charges

NEW CASTLE — A South Side man was arrested on gun and drug charges following a traffic stop on the city’s North Hill.

Martel Lamar Webb, 19, of 199 Hamilton St. had been wanted by police on charges in a domestic assault case in May when police caught up with him.

A New Castle officer driving on East Lincoln Avenue near New Castle High School around 12:30 a.m. Saturday pulled over a silver Volvo. The officer said Webb was in the car with three other people and the vehicle smelled of marijuana.

Police said Webb was holding two clear plastic bags of suspected marijuana in his hand, along with a marijuana cigarette. Police learned he was wanted on a warrant for simple assault charges. They confiscated $180 he had in his pocket.

Officers noted the car had been leased to a woman who was not an occupant. Upon searching it, they found a clear bag of suspected crack cocaine in the back of the driver’s seat where Webb was sitting. They also found a loaded semiautomatic handgun under the seat where Webb was seated.

Webb has previous felony convictions and is not permitted to have a gun, officers said.

He was taken into custody and the other occupants were released.

Webb is charged with one count each of illegally possessing a firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, manufacture of a controlled substance, and two counts of possession.

He was arraigned by District Judge Jennifer L. Nicholson who set his bond at $25,000.
