Man jailed on drug, assault charges

NEW CASTLE —

A South Side man who allegedly scuffled with a police officer is in the Lawrence County jail.

John Wayne Hawkins, 45, of 223 E. Falls St., is charged with aggravated assault, prohibited possession of an offensive weapon, possession of controlled substances and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He remains jailed on $5,000 bond. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

According to court documents, the New Castle police department Street Crimes Unit, working in plain clothes, encountered Hawkins about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday as officers staked out a house on Hamilton Street thought to be involved in illegal narcotic trafficking. Police said they saw Hawkins enter the house then drive off south on Hamilton.

Officers said they observed him committing several traffic violations and pulled up behind him as he entered a parking lot behind a bar. Officers said they identified themselves as police and advised Hawkins to get back into his car. They said they followed him into the bar where he tried to enter the restroom.

An officer said as he grabbed Hawkins, to stop him from disposing of possible evidence or barricading himself in the restroom, Hawkins struck him on the shoulder with his left elbow. A scuffle ensued as police took Hawkins into custody.

Police said they found plastic bags containing suspected marijuana and suspected crack cocaine, $40 and a box cutter. Police said they found a digital scale with suspected marijuana residue in the glove box of the vehicle.
