Police receive scam complaint

NEW CASTLE — Shenango Township police reported they have received a complaint from a resident regarding an apparent telephone scam.

According to officers, the complainant received a call Thursday from someone identifying himself as a representative of Publishers Clearing House. He told the woman she had won $5 million in a sweepstakes, but had to send two $500 prepaid credit cards to claim her winnings.

The woman said she had recognized the call was a scam and told the caller she would not send anything. Police investigated the call from the number (876) 536-4640 and said it originated in Jamaica. They added it had been used in scam attempts previously.
