NEW CASTLE — A man who tried to rob a convenience store pepper sprayed a customer, according to police.

A clerk at the Country Fair food mart on Croton Avenue told officers a man wearing a neoprene face mask and camouflage hoodie was in the store around 6:25 p.m. and allowed other customers to get in front of him in line.

As the line shortened, he approached the cashier, pointed pepper spray at her and asked if she knew what it was. He then asked for all the money.

She told police she grabbed a plastic bag and money from the register and threw the money on the floor as if she were putting it into the bag.

As the next customer approached the counter, he asked what was happening and the clerk said she was being robbed. The customer made a comment to the intruder, who sprayed him in the face with the pepper spray, police said. After a scuffle, the man took the bag and ran out.

The man who was sprayed sought medical treatment.

Police said an investigation is ongoing.
