Police intercept mail-order marijuana

NEW CASTLE — Pennsylvania state police this week recovered four pounds of suspected marijuana shipped from California to a Wampum address.

On Wednesday, Brianne Gaynelo Hedlund, 31, of 416 Galbreath St. was charged with criminal attempt to manufacture, deliver or possess a controlled substance; criminal conspiracy to manufacture, deliver or possess a controlled substance with intent to deliver; and two counts of possession of a controlled substance. She was arraigned before District Judge David Rishel and released on her own recognizance.

According to court documents, on Tuesday night, police intercepted a suspicious parcel at a Beaver County shipping company. The parcel, postmarked Yuba City, Calif., was addressed to 808 River Road, Wampum.

Officers said the envelope had been presented to a narcotics-detecting dog who indicated presence of a controlled substance. Police then secured a search warrant signed by a Beaver County common pleas court judge. After the suspected marijuana was discovered, police said, the parcel was resealed for a controlled delivery to the Wampum address.

Police obtained a second search warrant, issued by District Judge Jerry Cartwright, and a trooper, acting undercover as a delivery man, knocked at 808 River Road. Police said a resident called for “Brianne” and took custody of the marijuana-filled parcel, taking it inside.

About 10 minutes later, police said, officers armed with a search warrant entered the home, taking Hedlund and two other people there into custody.

Officers said they recovered the parcel and interviewed Hedlund. She admitted to her role in the package’s delivery, they said, and told them she had been paid $200 to accept it.

No other charges have been filed.
