Man dies after falling over cliff

NEW CASTLE — An Edinburg area man was killed Saturday night after falling down a cliff in Mahoning Township.

Heath Kill, 42, died at the scene.

Mahoning Township Police Chief Jim Morris said officers received the call of the accident at 10:23 p.m.

Morris said Kill had been trying to help someone turn around his Jeep Cherokee on a narrow grade of the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks between River Road and Churchill Road.

The other man was inside the vehicle and backing up when it began to slide backward over the cliff, falling 30 feet into a drainage ditch, Morris said. Kill ended up underneath the vehicle, he said.

An autopsy performed at the Beaver Valley Medical Center Sunday determined drowning as the cause of death, according to Al DeCarbo, Lawrence County deputy coroner.

The driver of the Jeep was not injured, Morris said. His name was not released.

Morris said the men knew each other.

Assisting Mahoning police were Union Township police and the Mahoning Township volunteer fire department.
