Cellphone call linked to accident

NEW CASTLE — A weekend accident on Oakwood Way is being blamed on a cellphone call.

Neshannock Township police said the driver is to be charged with careless driving.

Officers responded to the one-vehicle crash at 7:45 p.m. Saturday in the 100 block of Oakwood Way.

Thomas Hoover, 50, was westbound, police said, and talking on a cellphone when his truck went off the road and into a ditch.

The truck then hit a utility pole before flipping onto its roof, according to police.

Members of the Neshannock Township Volunteer Fire Department had to extricate Hoover from his vehicle and he was taken by ambulance to Jameson Hospital.

Also assisting at the scene were New Wilmington police and Neshannock Township fire police.

Oakwood Way had to be closed after the crash because of downed power lines.
