North Hill man faces more charges

NEW CASTLE — A North Hill man arrested on a warrant faces additional charges.

John Lavell Hawkins, 27, of 207 W. Lincoln Ave. is charged with manufacture, delivery or possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, prohibited possession of a firearm, possession of a concealed firearm without a license, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and an obstructed window. He was arraigned before District Judge Melissa Amodie and jailed in lieu of $25,000 bond.

New Castle police said about 5:15 p.m. Saturday they had seen a car with multiple items hanging from its rear-view mirror and no validation sticker on the license plate pull from Green Street to West Grant Street.

Officers said they learned a bench warrant had been issued for the driver, Hawkins, who was taken into custody.

Police said they found $1,727 and a cell phone in Hawkins’ possession. Officers searched the car and found an eyeglasses case containing several empty sandwich bags, a digital scale containing suspected cocaine residue, a plastic bag containing suspected cocaine residue under the front passenger seat and suspected loose marijuana inside the front seat passenger door handle. Officers said they also detected the smell of marijuana.

Police obtained a search warrant and searched the car again, they said, and in the glove box found a digital scale with suspected cocaine residue, a bag containing 14.5 grams of suspected crack cocaine and a 9 mm handgun containing nine live rounds.
