North Hill man charged following chase

NEW CASTLE — A North Hill man faces 21 charges after a high speed chase early Monday.

New Castle police charged Benjaman Frank Jones III, 34, of 720 Carlisle St., with aggravated assault, fleeing and eluding officers, driving while under the influence of a controlled substance, recklessly endangering another person, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, reckless driving, careless driving, driving at an unsafe speed, driving without headlights and multiple charges of failing to stop at red lights and disregarding caution signals.

He was arraigned before District Judge Melissa Amodie and jailed in lieu of $50,000 bond. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 27.

Police said about 12:30 a.m. they encountered a vehicle driving in circles at a high speed in the parking lot of an East Washington Street business. The officer said he pulled his patrol car into the lot and the driver, later identified as Jones, initially continued to drive in circles then drove directly at the police car, swerving just before striking it. The officer said he got behind Jones’ vehicle which led him in numerous circles around the parking lot before exiting and returning twice to the parking lot.

The officer said Jones then pulled from the lot at high speed onto East Washington Street, almost colliding with another police car. Officers followed the car to North Jefferson Street and Wilmington Road. Police said Jones traveled in excess of 100 miles per hour up the center turning lane of Wilmington Road to the Pennsylvania state police station, where he became boxed in near the front doors.

Officers said they observed the driver failing to stop for steady red traffic signals along the way.

Police said the driver and passenger were ordered to keep their hands above their heads and the driver told to exit the car by opening the door from the outside. Officers said Jones lowered his arms toward the center of the vehicle as if reaching for something.

Police said they reached through the open driver’s door window and Tasered Jones when he pulled away from them. He was taken into custody and the female passenger was pulled from the car and handcuffed. Police said she was taken to the police station, where she refused to make a statement and was then released.
