Man facing 31 child porn charges

NEW CASTLE — A Volant man is facing charges involving child pornography.

State police filed charges against Mark Anthony Looney, 38, of 2382 Route 956. The case stems from the seizing late last year of a computer owned by Looney when he was charged with having inappropriate contact with an 11-year-old girl.

Wednesday, state police filed 31 counts each of child pornography and criminal use of a communication facility against Looney. He was arraigned before District Judge Scott McGrath, who ordered him placed in the Lawrence County jail on $10,000 bond.

In December, Looney was charged with sending obscene or other sexual materials to a child via the Internet, unlawful contact with a minor and corruption of minors. Looney waived those charges to Lawrence County Common Pleas Court, where he is tentatively scheduled to stand trial Aug. 5.

As a result of the earlier charges, state police said, they seized his computer and its contents were analyzed. Various illicit images were found, police said, leading to the additional charges.

A preliminary hearing on the new charges is scheduled for Wednesday.
