Man jailed in domestic gun incident

NEW CASTLE — A North Hill man accused of threatening a woman with a gun while three children were sleeping is in jail.

Erik B. Alvarado, 44,  of 511 E. Hillcrest Ave. is charged with three counts of unlawful restraint of a minor and endangering the welfare of children, and one count each of unlawful restraint/serious bodily injury, illegal possession of a firearm, terroristic threats, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, resisting arrest, harassment, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.

He was arraigned by District Judge Melissa A. Amodie who set his bond at $50,000. He remains in the Lawrence County jail.

New Castle police were called to the house around 3:30 a.m. yesterday for a domestic disturbance. Officers said  Alvarado was inside, allegedly threatening to kill a woman.

Police said they could hear Alvarado screaming at the woman and could see him walking around inside the house.

The woman told officers Alvarado had been in an upstairs  bedroom when he began screaming at her for no known reason, hit her in the face and pushed her onto the floor.

She told police he pulled a gun, stuck something into the bottom of it and cocked it back, screaming and threatening to killer her. She said he then entered the children’s bedroom. She said she entered the room and tried keep him out.

She said he then went downstairs and told her to join him.

Police said they deployed Tasers after Alvarado  disregarded orders to get on the ground. Officers said they wrestled him to the ground and handcuff him.

Another man who was inside the house was handcuffed briefly then released. Police found the woman and her three children crying in an upstairs bedroom.

Police said they searched Alvarado but found no gun, nor did they find one inside the house. However, oficers said a live 9  millimeter casing was found in the upstairs bedroom where he allegedly cocked the gun.

Police said Alvarado had a prior felony conviction.
