NEW CASTLE —
A man charged with breaking into a Shenango Township home and attacking the resident is facing a new count.
Shenango Township police have charged Robert Michael Maguire, 38, of 1506 Grimes St. with criminal attempt to escape. They said he had tried to break through the ceiling of a Jameson Hospital restroom after he was taken to that facility.
Police took Grimes into custody late Friday night after he was identified as the individual who had broken into a Willow Way apartment and beat the man who lives there. Police later charged him with 14 counts, including aggravated assault and burglary.
While being interviewed at the Shenango police station regarding the incident, officers said, Maguire started to complain of chest pains.
He was taken to Jameson Hospital by ambulance, with police following.
Around 4:30 a.m. Saturday, police said, Maguire stated he felt sick and asked to use the restroom. Police said he shut and locked the door, then refused to respond to police.
When officers obtained a master key and opened the door, they said, they found Maguire in the ceiling rafters where he had removed a ceiling tile.
After police brought Maguire down from the rafters, police said, he told them, “Well, I tried,” later adding, “Oh well, what are you gonna do, arrest me?”
Attempted escape charges were filed Tuesday with District Judge David Rishel, who arraigned Maguire and ordered him held in the Lawrence County jail in lieu of $50,000 bond.
This is the same amount set for Maguire in the assault and burglary case.
His preliminary hearing on the escape attempt is scheduled for Tuesday.
