More than 30 cats saved from fire

NEW CASTLE — More than three dozen cats were saved from a trailer fire Friday morning in Perry Township.

However, other felines in the trailer were not so fortunate.

The Wurtemburg-Perry Volunteer Fire Department responded to the blaze shortly after 6 a.m. at 1098 McCartney Hollow Road.

Brian Partridge, Wurtenburg-Perry’s assistant fire chief, said crews arrived to find one portion of the trailer in flames. They discovered that although the trailer — owned by Dorothy Logan — was unoccupied by humans, it was being rented out for use as a sanctuary for what were described as rescued cats.

Partridge noted there are no fire hydrants in the vicinity of the trailer, so water had to be hauled in by tanker on a warm, muggy morning. Also, the trailer was on a narrow road, making it difficult to reach.

“It was a little bit of a challenge,” he said.

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to one end of the trailer, but the structure still was considered a total loss. Partridge estimated damage to the uninsured trailer at $20,000.

The cause of the fire is being listed as accidental, Partridge said, believed to have been electrical.

Cats rescued from the fire were treated at the scene with assistance from the Noga Ambulance Service, Partridge said. Special oxygen masks, designed for dogs and cats were used in the effort, he noted. In this manner, approximately 40 of the animals were saved, but Partridge said not all the cats in the trailer survived.

In addition to Wurtemburg-Perry, other departments responding included Ellwood City, Franklin, Wayne and Chewton.

Partridge pointed out the holiday weekend made it difficult to locate firefighters, so the assistance of the other departments was crucial.
