NEW CASTLE — New Castle police continue to seek clues as to who robbed a Mahoningtown convenience store at gunpoint.

A clerk at the Last Minit Mart at 513 Mongtomery Ave. told police she had been stocking cigarettes around 5:45 p.m. Wednesday when she noticed the outside ashtray was burning. She went out, extinguished the fire, went back to resume stocking and saw a man leaning on the counter.

She said he wore a black mask, pointed a gun at her and told her to “give me the money,” several times, according to police.

The clerk told officers she had hesitated because she did not believe it was a real gun. He then cocked it and she immediately gave him cash from the drawer, she said.

The robber took an undetermined number of 20- and five-dollar bills from both cash drawers in the store, then ran out, according to police.

New Castle Police Chief Bobby Salem said officers had executed search warrants on a house and a vehicle Wednesday and are investigating a couple of possible suspects.

As of Thursday night, no arrests had been made.
